About 2 weeks ago the fuel pump went out in my brothers 1990 f-150 with a 302. We replaced it and it ran fine. Well yesturday it did the same thing. it started sputerring and acted like it was starving for fuel because when you gave it gas it wanted to die. It finially quit running. I stent the afternoon replaceing the fuel pump because i have heard that you can sometimes get a bad part. It didnt help so i then replaced the relay. It didnt help either. Once upon a time I thought I was getting the hang of the fuel injected vehicles, but now i am really stumped. Any and all help would be great. Thanks in advance.
That's what I was going to ask. Will the pump run? If it doesn't then see if it will run wired direct.(away from a fuel source, of course) The next simple thing that I would look at is the fuel filter....ever been changed? Good luck
When i replaced the pump the first time i went ahead and replace the inline filter just to be sure it wasnt part of the problem. Right before I put the second pump in i wired it direct to the battery and it ran just fine. Now when i turn the key i can even hear the pump pressure up. It seems like it isnt getting any power. Looks like i am going to tank the tank off again and just the wires.
Is there anything else you guys can think of please let me know, because my brother is on a tight budget and i am tring to help him out. Thanks in advance.
Ps: Where would i need to look to find the fuse for fuel pump? the fuse panal in the cab under the steering wheel doesnt have one that says it is for the fuel pump.
Just an up date on what is going on. I have taken teh tank off again and tried the pump. It runs just fine when wired dirertly to the battery, but when you plug it into the plug it doesnt work. Is there a fuseable link somewhere that i am not seeing, or maybe a fuse in another place other than in the drivers side dash? Any and all suggestion appreciated. Thanks in advance.
most fuel injected rides have a safey devise somewhere. In an
accindent this activates it and shuts down fuel pump. You don't want 60 psi of fuel spewing around. So check for anything electrical malfunctions 1st. GOD BLESS
Check for spark and make sure the TFI is not AFU.I would also check the ground connection in the harness for the fuel pump.If you have a haynes manual it shows how to jump the fuel pump relay in the diagnostic connector. This should turn the pump on.You can hook a gauge up to the fuel rail and see how much pressure you get. It's possible some trash in the tank could be plugging the pickup.I would try and rule out an electrical problem first.Dropping the tank is a PITA.Good luck.
I am not sure what the TFI is or where it is located. Would it be a good investment to buy a haynes manual? I have never delt with one so i am not formilar with how helpful they are. Thanks for the advaise, but please keep it comeing so i can have my brother back on ther raod.
The TFI (Thick Film Integrated circuit) is the thingie that's attached to the distributor. It helps control the spark advance. If it craps out, as they have been doing, your engine will crank, but it won't fire. Have somebody crank the engine while you pull a spark plug wire off a spark plug. If you get shocked, the engine is getting spark.
I replaced the TFI just before the first fuel pump went out. Right now i can seem to get power to the pump when it is pluged in. It looks like i am going to have to go out of town for a few days on business, so i wont be able to respond for awhile, but keep sending suggestions and i will try them when i get back. Thanks in advance.
Get a haynes manual. They don't call em fix or repair dailys for nothing. If you get a haynes manual it will show you how to jump the fuel pump at the DLC and make it run.I would pull the connector and check for voltage at the connector with the fuel pump jumped. If you are not getting voltage, look at the wiring diagram and start checking the circuit to see where the problem is.If you have voltage check the ground circuit.
I would also check the relay that supplies power to the computer. I'm not sure exactly what it is called, but it should be close to the fuel pump relay.
