I have a 74 F250 with a 360 that smokes like hell, it has true dual exhaust on it and the wierd thing is, is that it will blow blue smoke from one side of the exhaust one day then a couple of days later I will look at it again and it will be blowing smoke from the other side, but only one side at a time. It also only smokes when it is at idle or after I revv it up and the RPMs are on the way down. It doesnt seem to smoke under load, and it is definietly burning oil. I don't have the money to rebuild it, I was kinda hoping maybee it was the umbrella seals and not something internal, but its probably not, if it is valves, then I might as well rebuild the motor. So I was thinking, I have a 89 302 HO from a Lincoln LSC, I was thinking about putting in the truck, but I don't want it to be a dog. I am not sure what to do. What do you guys think?------Jack
ok, I guess instead of saying umbrella seals, I should have said valve seals, they are easy, I did them on a chevy 350 and it solved the smoking, but that thing only smoked a little bit. I guess I should pull the valve covers and see if the seals are even there anymore.----Jack
Ha haa, it funny you mention the PCV valve, actually its disconnected for some reason, I have to reconnect it, the previous owner must have done that.----Jack
Yes, you are right, I was planning on swapping to a c6 SB or c4 tranny if I had to , I have a couple but I really don't want to swap engines at all, I kinda like the BB and the originality as well.----Jack
jack, keep that FE engine or if your going to replace it stay with an FE (390-428 c.i.). that 302 wont give you the torque you need for a truck. It will be a dog... next best thing if your gonna to do a total change, something in the 429-460 c.i. category. you'd be better off with a 300 c.i. 6 cyl (damn fine engine). than that 302.
I can't under stand why everybody knocks the 302 ( 5.0 ) in a truck. I run a 1983 Lincoln 302 with a automatic overdrive tranny in my 76 F150 flatbed and have no problems at all, In fact my truck has hauled 2,238 pounds of crushed stone ( yup the leaf springs were arched the other way and the tires were squshed ) and aprox 2 thousands pounds of roofing shingles, Pulled a 60 foot by 12 foot mobile home thru the trailer park I live in with out even a grunt from my engine. Now the AOD tranny is hurting from this work-out and needs replacing but the engine ( like a timex watch ) keeps on ticking. Best engine I ever run in this truck since I blew-up both a 390 and a 400.
I don't mean to get into a heated discussion about this, and I didnt mean to group the entire 260-302 ci. as a whole were "bad" engines. I was referring to the specific 302 mentioned in this thread. You did however point out yourself one of the shortcomings of the 302. It's not just the engine but the related components, trans, rear axle and so on as well that might not fair well under heavy load conditions. sure, the 302 can be beefed up to provide more ponies and tourque, but IMO its a automobile engine that was adapted by Ford for use in the light trucks (f100 and f150) and not meant to deliver the needs of heavy hauling, towing, plowing etc. for great lengths of time. A stock FE, 300-6,429-460 will always outperform the stock 302 as far as tourque goes. which is your primary concern in a truck used like a truck.
I have owned a mercury comet (289) and ford fairlane (260) and they were great engines never had a prob with them.
