OK,,, I'm gonna do it! I bought a 1974 460 today with 70,000 original miles from a Lincoln, and gonna put it in the Bronco. Motor mounts will be in tomorrow.,
Anything I should expect as far as problems? Hoses, wires, lines, starter, fly wheel?
All feedback is welcomed!
You will need an oil pan and pickup from an 80s model van. These are still available from Ford. I think they go for about $75 for the pan. You will also need to modify the original alternator position. It will not clear the frame rail in the stock location. L&L sell the new bolt on brackets that moves the alternator up level with the power steering pump but they are about $100. Thats what I did but its up to you. You might have trouble with the passenger side car manifold hitting the frame. Some people knotch the frame slightly while others buy a 2wd truck manifold. Either will work or you can buy L&Ls headers for about $600. Again, thats what I did but its up to you. Other than that its a pretty straight forward drop in deal.
hey my 460 came out of a 79 bronc and the car style alt bracket cleared cause the front x-member is different than a F-250. As far as oilpan it seem to clear but my bronc had a 4"lift also

Crazy,,,
Keep talking, was it the front sump? My Bronco has a 4 inch lift on it as well.
I was thinking of just welding or bolting a piece of metal on the bracket to extend it up a bit. I may have to get an extended belt though,,, no biggie though.
As far as the exhaust goes, maybe I'll just notch the frame. But it looks like if I just bend the pipe a lil it may fit. The manifolds look like they MIGHT clear the frame,,, MAYBE! They are pretty close to the block.
I have heard that the 74 model 460s are the choice motors to get as power goes. Am I right or have I been misled???
Take pictures and make a tech thread so I can refer to it (sometime this summer hopefully)
and you're probably going to want to change your username
I will do that Captain, I have some pics I need to post for a tech thread on a steering box/frame repair I done recently on my 79 F-150. I took alot of pics, step by step.
And the name,,,,,,, The F-150 still has a 400 in it! lol, But I have been thinking about changing it any how.
older engines will have higher horespower ratings from the manufactures b/c they used leaded gas........no more leaded gas.....hp ratings aren't the same....among other things
well, dont quote me on that, thats what i hear.......
Before emssions cut back everything on all the engines, the 460 had about a 10.5:1 or so, CR.
After it was dropped to 8.5:1, among other things 74 and previous trucks didn't have to have catalitic (sp?)converters 75+ did. But that wouldn't matter in this situation.
Don't know when the egr was put on the intakes...
yeha its a front sump pan. the alt will be ok cause mine was. Ill see if i can get a pic of my motor mounts. i think they are key to why everything fits.
Ford400man, Don't quote me on this, but IF I remeber correctly, then the 71 460s are the ones you want (pre smog...higher compression ratio).
Kris?
Thats correct Matt.
71 and earlier engines use D0VE C9VE or C8VE Heads. All of these will net you a compression in the 10:1+ range with a standard rebuild. This is too much to support pump gas (93 oct). The engine will ping and detonate. You really want D3 heads to keep compression in the 9:1 range.
