Sending Units

I need new sending units for both tanks, Can I get one out of a gas truck and use in mine or does it got to be out of a diesel?

I need both as well. I've heard the gas ones will not work because there is no return line. I sure that could be added though as long as the mounting points are the same.

As long as you the right years for your tanks. They have changed the sender hole size but the tanks are the physically the same. You can put a return line in the sender.

When you change your senders get you a wax toilet seal at the hardware store. That wax makes a good seal around those senders to keep water out and helps keep the tank from rusting up.

or could I use parts off the sending unit and put the parts needed replaced on mine?

My gauge goes all over the place, the truck is full and the gauge stayed that way then after we went driving its down the a half then it goes up and down, the front tank has no fuel but the gauge shows full. Floats sticking right?

Check your wiring in your truck also. The front tank may have a wiring problem or the sender. Unplug the sender when it is set on the front tank and see if the gauge changes.

The sender is a wire wound potensiometer.... there is a small arm that contacts the windings, where ever it contacts is where the level is....... if it is not contacting then it will show full.

What you will find is like PS19 and PS20 on this site....

Automotive Parts - Accessories and Sound Systems for your Car or Truck 1-720-404-8088: Performance Engines: Fuel Tanks & Accessories

You may get away with just gently opening the sender and bending the potensiometer arm so it contacts in full travel......

One of mine is showing way past full and the other is stuck on empty. I will try pulling them and trying to see if the low one is humg up and check to see if the other is making proper contact. If they can't be fixed, I'm going to try to use a gas one or at least some parts off of it as an experiment.

You can get it out without much trouble. Go get you an outboard boat motor primer bulb. Put a piece of fuel line on each end and put it in the tank through the fill hole. You can get into the tank. Give a couple of squeezes and it will start siphoning the fuel out. Get your jugs below the level of the tank.

I have learned that in my adult life. I wish I could have came up with that when I was in my teens siphoning gas out of grandpa's tractors for Friday and Sat. night. I have tasted allot of gas.

If I was looking at dropping both tanks, I would pull the bed.

After you remove 6 bolts, and unplug the wires 4 guys can lift the bed off.
Dropping tanks takes 2 guys eating lots of dirt.

lower the rear bumper for clearence , then remove the left side bed bolt nuts , greatly loosen the right side bolts but leave the nuts on
lift the left side of the bed and prop it up with a milk crate and access is granted

I was just working on mine.. i opted to just pull the bed off by myself (and a forklift)
I also used the primer bulb to siphon the fuel.
