'97 Ford Explorer - Transfer Case?

'97 Ford Explorer - Transfer Case?
Hi,
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer that got stuck in 4wd approx. 5 months ago and we had a transmisson put in and a 'bar' was broke in the transfer case. It ran ok except for a pop every now & then. A HARD POP started when backing up and then a grinding when driving like it was 'slipping gear'?? The grinding stopped when I pushed the gas and started when I let off of the gas. Will not go in reverse at all. I'm stumped...transmisson guy says it is the transfer case not the transmission. Anyone have ANY ideas?
