Hello all
I have an 84 and it has been a great truck since i bought it, but I am starting to have problems now, it was idleing rough and when i tried to accelerate it would jerk alot like it was not getting fuel, went under the hood and the main vacum line had crumbled so i replaced it and it ran fine until a few days ago, now it is doing the same thing except now when I first crank it it runs smooth but when I start driving it is doing the same thing over again, the vacum line is good, could it be the fuel filter? or maybe the distributor, i pulled the distributor cap and there was some white powdery build up on the clips and the rotor was loose, could this be affecting the engine, i'm pretty much a shade tree mechanic, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, if I can fix it myself, instead of taking it to a shop, that's what I would like to do.
Thanks
What engine and tranny are in the truck? How many miles? How many mile since the last tune up?
Check all the vacuum connections, there's more than one. It could be a fuel filter, although when they've gone on me before the truck usually dies from fuel starvation. Cheap, easy to replace. Change the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Inspect the plugs' condition, they will tell you much about how your engine's running.
As BaronVonAutomatic said, there's more than one vaccum line and as this solved you problem temporarily, it's probably the best place to start. If one vaccum line crumbles, the rest probably aren't in the best shape and replacing all of them is the cheapest thing you'll ever do to that vehicle. It probably costs that much to vaccum it out at the car wash. Did that "main" vaccum line go to PVC valve? If so check to make sure it rattles, and try pulling it off with the motor running. I'd bet you have another vaccum leak that developed after you fixed that one, though. Those white deposits on the distributor cap are common, I've never found cleaning them or replacing the cap to make much difference, but I would clean them. If your rotor is wobbling, you probably ought to pony up the coupla bucks to replace it, whether it's part of your prob or not. That ought to keep you busy for a little while, check back one way or another. And don't forget to check those plugs, and give BVA his answers.

engine is a 351W 2bbl, tranny I'm not sure, I think it is C6, unsure of mileage the odometer reads 3432, but I'm sure it has rolled, last tune up I have no clue, I just bought the truck, It probaly could use one though. I replaced the fuel filter, rotor, and dist. cap this weekend, I tryed to do the spark plugs as well, but I couldn't bust them loose, and I didn't want to break them off. After I did all that she cranked right up and sounded great and had alot of power accelerating, and this morning it starting doing the same thing again, I haven't had a chance to check the vacum lines yet, I will give that a try tomorrow, and try to get a defanant answer on the tranny. Any advice on busting those plugs loose?
Have you tried it with the motor hot? You could also spray them with PB Blaster and let them sit overnight. Between the 2, you might be able to bust them loose. Or find a place that advertises a cheap tune and let them worry about it.
