I've been wondering if I should eliminate my catalac converters all together or keep it like it is. I really want it to be louder - and I want that tractor sound. I researched it a little and found an EFI 300 can sound like a tractor too.
Questions;
Would my truck be louder with no cats, no pipes? How much of a power loss and gas mileage would I get if I kill both cats?
yea it would make your truck alot louder. i took both of mine out and put a single chamber vx muffler on it and i think it sounds about as close to a v8 as i will ever get with a 4.9. as long as you have a muffler on it so you dont loss all you back pressure you shouldnt notice a difference in power or gas if anything it should get better as long as you put a performance muffler on it. it will just give your motor more breathing without all of that on there
Thanks guys, all I needed to know. I'm going to leave it alone. I was just hoping I could make it sound better without spending any more money. It may not be loud enough, but at least it sounds OK.
My neighbor's sons inline has nothing but a cat on it, and it's really quiet. Why don't you try to gut the cat and see how it sounds first? It's really quick to do, and it'll look like there's been nothing done.

BIG bar and a sawzall's all you need.

Are you saying to cut off the second cat, and from there I'll be able to gut the first cat?
What does your neighbor's son's truck sound like with just one cat?
It's quiet. No, my truck only has one cat...I didn't know yours had two. I was talking about cutting right before the cat and gutting it, maybe you can do it to both, or do it to one and see what it sounds like, then do the other if you want more?

Thank you for your time Matt. I decided to leave well enough alone. I opened up all my windows including my back glass and gave my truck some gas at different levels - it sounds good enough without being so loud to as to be obnoxious. I guess because the 300 is such a "big" six it really sounds good almost no matter what you do to it. It's no V8 by any means, but I like how 300's sound.
I agree Bill, your truck sounds great like it is. We used to open the exhaust up after the catilitic converter and jam a rod through the screen on the converter then start it up and blow the beads out of the converter.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I've been thinking about putting an exhaust on mine, just haven't decided on which way to go yet. There's alot of ways to go with it...Maybe some cherry bombs, don't know yet.
Welllllllllll. A V6 Pontiac came through today at work. I thought it had a built V8; when I asked the guy, he said it was a V6. He put flowmasters on it. Which got me thinking. Does anybody know about Flowmasters? He told me he had 40's on his. I heard 44's were a lot better overall. Anybody know what a 300 would sound like with a 40 or 44 Flowmaster?????
not much louder than any other muffler on a 300. i have run no muffler, a glass pack and a flowmaster 40 on my truck, and unless you run straight pipes with no catalytic converters you aren't going to anything very loud at all with an inline six.
