carb connected to automatic transmission

I've got a 78 F150 XLT supercab 302 5.0L and I'm rebuilding the 2150 carb. I buggered up the throttle shaft, so I got a new one from BFIC, or at least I thought I did. When I got it this afternoon I noticed that it was missing the connection on the lever for the rod to the transmission. The rod connects right next to the gear shift connection, but I'm not sure what it does besides possibly help with shifting? My question is do I need this connection and if so, how does anyone suggest that I connect this rod to the throttle lever on the carb?

I would post a picture but ever since I signed up for FTE this weekend, my account has gone screwy. I can't even edit my galleries or look at any pics in the galleries besides the first page. When it gets straightened out, I'll post some pics.

Yes you do need it. Can you take off the one from the messed up shaft and fit it on the new shaft?

I don't think so

I don't think you can remove the lever from the throttle shaft. After looking for a photo of my throttle shaft on line I figured out that it's the kickdown lever connection on the shaft that I'm needing. I told the guys that I bought the shaft from that it was an automatic and what model carb I had, so I may try to call them back and see what they can work out for me. I'm just not looking forward to removing another throttle shaft if I have to.

would there be a part number possibly???

The problem isn't removing them it is getting them back with the plates centered that is the trick.

can you remove the lever though?

I've seen the kickdown lever they sell for holley carbs, but I can't seem to find one for motorcraft or autolite. If I can remove the lever from the throttle shaft I will try that. Right now the throttle shaft is basically useless to me, so I'm willing to try if it will come off.

The lever is your throttle input to the governor in the transmission, Without it the transmission will not shift correctly and the tranny will burn up extremely fast.
Have you cross referenced the numbers on your motorcraft carb with Holley carbs? I dont know if Holley makes all Motorcraft carbs but they did make a few.

If you have a C4 or C6, it will shift fine, it just will not kick down when you mash the pedal. These use a modulator valve to regulate line pressures. The AOD uses a TV cable to control shifts and pressures and must be hooked up.

thanks for the info guys

That sounds similar to what I've read on the internet. I do have a C4, and saw that it 'could' work, but figured it was there for a reason. But I finally got some good news!!! I called BFIC-carbsonly on Wed and he asked me to send him a photo of the two throttle shafts. He called me back the next morning saying he found the part and he's shipping it to me fedex at no charge.

Bad news, is that during the stand down in rebuilding the carb, I crawled around under the truck, and let's just say my list of things to fix got much much longer!!!!
