Crank Position Sensor Help

Hi
I am about to change the crank position sensor on my o3 3.0L Ranger. Its the first time I've changed a Crank sensor on any car so I could use your advice before I start.

First do I need to drain the oil or is the sensor separate from the block? I think the sensor is on the passenger side of the motor and easy to get to from the outside... Am I correct?

Any tricks to keep from installing the sensor incorrectly and messing up my timming? I assume the teath on the sensor are alligned like an old distributor and a little twist makes a big difference?

Thanks for your help.

-Mike

OK.. you're actually changing the CAM position sensor (actually the sensor bolts on up top.. you'll be changing the 'synchronizer' assembly)... a common problem on these.

It installs just like a distributor.. you remove the top sensor (2 small screws), unbolt the hold down bolt and slide the assembly up and out.

This is located on the back of the engine on the passenger side.. a bit of a pain but not too difficult.

Here's the trick though... the new one has to be installed in the SAME EXACT position of the old one (more than a 2 degree variance will cause problems). Make a mark of the 'rotor' in relation to the synchro housing, and ALSO of the synchro housing in relation to the engine. Transfer your makes to the new unit at exactly the same spot, and install the new one in the same exact position. If you take your time and do this right, you'll be fine.

Also make sure you dip the assembly gears in some oil first, as it makes installation easier. There is no need to drain the engine oil.
