Questions for Upgrades on my new 96 F250 PSD

Just got a truck, but it is all factory as far as I know. I've just been tryin to service it and get all the kinks worked out right now. First thing though is that the factory cover for the air filter/intake is broken and I need a new one. Before I just try and replace it with the same factory one from the dealership I was wondering what are the advantages of aftermarket intake/filter? I was also wondering what were some good brands or types to use that are relatively affordable? Also while I'm at it, lookin to maybe make a few other little upgrades if I find some that are reasonable. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm new to this truck and diesel thing, but I'm lookin to start gettin into it and learning. I probably got about 500-800 dollars to use if that gives any kind of idea for better suggestions. Keep in mind that I am a beginner. BTW it seems to run just fine Two things though, it shifts pretty hard out of first and sometimes second gear, not sure if that's normal, and at anything over 78 MPH the truck starts to shake pretty bad (the speedo only goes to 85 or 90 though, so its probably normal or the wheels are just out of balance). Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

First off, welcome to

Second, do a search for "FPR Shim", "10K", and another for "6637"; that should give you plenty of reading material for now. With $500 - $800 to spend, even after doing these mods, you'll have some money left over.

Don't worry though, if you have money to spend, we'll be more than happy to show you how.

Do a search on here for 6637 air intake and you will find info for a really good cheap air intake that you can make. The next thing I would do is look into an exhuast system from turbo back. There are tons of mods for these trucks that are pretty cheap such as the 10k mod FPR shim (fuel pressure regulator) and EOT mod that wake our trucks up as well as a custom chip. Do a search for those mods and you will find tons of info and if you have any questions just ask and someone will help you out.

As far as the tranny I would check the fluid condition and maybe do a flush. Is the OD off light flashing?

Oh and welcome to FTE and be carefull of the PMS it will get to you.

I thought you'd be faster than me. You're in FL; I'm in ID. You're two hours ahead of me.

I agree do the 6637 intake filter. Get it at NAPA and tell them you want the AAA discount. It helps a little. Then get a new downpipe (DP) at a minimum. You may be able to get a whole new 4" exhaust system. Remove the cat. Do the 10K mod or 15.5 if you feel wild. Check the fuel pressure on the side of the filter housing with a regular tire gauge. If it is around 55 psi or lower do the FPR/BB mod.

After all of this you will still have money left depending on what you chose for the exhaust. You will now be ready for all the other mods that WILL follow. Gauges, intercooler, injectors...etc. etc. etc.

Beware of PMS (powerstroke mod syndrome) and WELCOME to FTE. You will learn much here.

Thanks for all the great info guys, this forum has been extremely informative so far. I've been looking into the 6637, 10k, fpr shim and exhaust along with a few other enigine cleanup things. I have another question though, I have a cowboy bumper on the rear and it is a little banged up. Any suggestions on where to get a new, newish one or get mine refinished?

Ok, I gotta ask this one, because I'm a California city-boy transplanted into Idaho...

What is a "cowboy" bumper? I'd think you'd be able to get a "newish" bumper from the pick-and-pull yard.

as for the bumper, I always wanted one for my truck but never had much luck in finding one.

Now that's a HUGE bumper. If I installed that on my truck, I wouldn't be able to use my trailer hitch.

I have the AFE stage 2 but if i did it again it would be the 6637.....cant beat the price. FTE has great info and contributers so do some searches before you buy.
