Gents,
I am having an issue with the transmission or 4x4 when I am driving down the road intermitently I here a grind coming from the front of the the trick. This happens intermitently and not all the time. The key thing here is that when I switch the shift on the fly to 4-high it goes away immediately. I tried to search the forum but no joy I remember someone talking about water in vacumm lines or something but cant find it. I am taking it to the dealer tommorow but would like any advice from the experts out there. Thanks in advance!!
It may be your IWE solinoid. It gets water in the solinoid and causes it to engauge the 4x4 hubs. But if water got into the vacuum lines then it may have also put water in your hubs and now the seals are leaking. Ford has an updated IWE solinoid with a bracket. It is also a TSB.
As 86caprirs mentioned, probably the solenoid. You probably have a vacuum leak or water leak in the lines. There was a thread that detailed checking out the solenoid to see if that was your issue. I'm surprised it didn't show up if you did a search. Although, the search function is a little archaic...
My 2002 has seen the back side of Mars, and hasn't had a single issue with the 4X4 system. Reading the 4X4 threads makes me scared to take my 2008 to the car wash. Have they fixed the known issues in the 2008's, or are the systems totally different?
The 2002 has a different 4x4 system all together. You have a vacuum motor on your front axle that engages a shift fork in the axle. That is also a common problem with those trucks. The shift fork will break off the tabs that engauge the gear in the front diff. It is a little more expensive to fix due to you have to pull the r/s of the axle tube off and perform the repair.

I had the solenoid replaced about two weeks ago, and haven't had a problem since. When my truck first started making the noise described in the first post, I came home and researched this site to find out the info on the old solenoid with no water cover. That night, I unhooked the air tubes at the solenoid and also at the wheels. Turned on my air compressor at about 10lbs and blew out the lines. Then took a Gilette Shaving cream cap and cut a rounded out area to fit over the old solenoid. Drove it like that for a week. Took it to the dealership and the old solenoid was replaced under warranty. No problems so far.
