while driving im hearing a whine that increases with engine speed. with the hood open it seems to be coming from the area around the water pump. my only accesories are p/s and the alt and my belts are tight. im not losing water and the weep hole9if there is one on a ford isnt leaking. anyone ever had a symptom like this prior to failure of the water pump? if not any ideas what this could be?
yeah my p/s pump makes some noise but i can hear a different noise ..might sound stupid ill end up replacing my wp i guess its only 25 bucks or so. i guess i was just wondering if anyone out there had heard a wp make alot of noise..bearings wearing out and whatnot.
a part of me feels like i should just let it be, being a 22y.o. truck but i absolutley hate little noises and get real paranoid
One way to tell for sure whats going out on you is to take a l-o-n-g screwdriver and put the handle to your ear and put the business end on the alt., power steering pump and water pump with the engine running. If the bearings are going bad in either one of them, the sound will transfer through the screwdriver and act like a stethoscope.
dont think its the alt but good call on the screw driver i hadnt thought of that now i remember having a stethescope in auto shop back in school thanks~!
ok it was very warm today as i work 2nd shift it was probably 75 when i fired her up this morning. she didnt want to idle worth a darn and a noticeable miss is occuring at idle. going down the road im running fine. my noise im hearing could be a vacum leak? and i suppose that could cause the above symptoms? on colder days she takes a while to warm but usually runs much better
also when i stopped for gas after about 10 miles of running the engine turned over real slow..weak starter? starter getting hot? i had to start it about 5 times before shed stay running in gear
Well....
If you're hard starting today I'd check to see if it isn't the alternator going out.
Once it's running check the voltage across the battery terminals.
The rough running worries me,.....like water in a cylinder, or two...
86, 351w no sign of water loss, oils good, water level normal. all the emissions are gone newer holley installed i havent checked torque on the bolts but i have been meaning to and funds are slowing me from buying a vacum gauge so i can tune this carb
I had a cracked head that would wet 1 or 2 cylinders and cause rough starts until the cylinder and plug dried out, then it would run fine 'till the next time I stopped, and it pumped more coolant into the cylinder.
If you have all the emissions gone and the vacuum capped off there's not much left to leak.
A vacuum leak would be more of a hissing than a squeal.
I'd check the battery voltage and starter connections if you have slow cranking.
Check your timing a little to much advance will cause hard starting hot. As for the wining noise can you disconnect fan belts one at a time if you have two different belts to isolate the noise. Check your choke it could be sticking causing you miss on warm days.
