Rebuilding the 4R100

I drive a 00 Excursion V-10 4x4 towing a 31' TT and the soft shifting bothers me. It has 89K so I was considering having it rebuilt with a firmer shift. How much does it cost to get a quality rebuild.

Three years ago the trans in my 350 burned up and ate itself alive. The only thing the trans shop was able to save was the case. It cost $3800 to replace everything. But that was an extreme case and it shouldn’t cost you that much if you have a good running truck. Remember also for that money you could have a new one from one of the specialty shops out there that do these slushboxes. That would be the best thing and if I wasn’t in a bind and had to get my truck back as fast as possibly that’s what I would have done.

The 4R100 is a sorry transmission at best. Even though it is based on old school design in the interest of weight savings a lot of parts that should have been steel and brass were replaced with aluminum and plastic. Plus the piggy backed electronic controls seem to confuse the trans more than it helps it. Unfortunately mod engines in big trucks don’t have much choice. These tranies can take the load that they are rated for but it can not take a shock load. As long as the load is gradually put on the truck it will be ok. But neutral drop it or try to rock out of a mud hole and it starts to get a little stressful. I know this is a little more than you ask but I want you to know what you’re up against. Most of the quick, cheap shift kits on the market are a waist of time. If you’re going to spend the money do it right and get one from one of the specialty shops.

They list the 4r100, but don't say much. Maybe you can contact them:

E4OD and 4R100E Performance Products

Again, listed but they talk more about the E4od, but maybe a source of info if not hard parts.
