I'm about to drop the engine back in my 84 F150 (302, 2bbl, 4x4, C6 trans)
I was told along the way that there is a gasket behind the torque converter that should be replaced while the engine is out (or it will leak ATF). None of the parts stores no what I'm talking about when I ask for it. Anyone know what it's called?
Also, I don't know much about transmissions/torque converters... When I pull the torque converter off, should I expect a massive transmission fluid eruption? (and therefore be prepared to replace the ATF?)
man kinda sounds like muffler bearings! hahaha What they most likely are talking about is the front seal around the input shaft, there are no "gaskets anywhere between the engine and trans and converter. It is a good idea to pop a new one in while you have everything torn down. Dan
When you get ready to put it al back together, do not forget to pull the torque convertor out of the tranny, and put a new seal in. The torque convertor is going to hang on the seal as soon as you get the engine out, and the seal will certainly leak if you don't put in a new one right before you install the engine. When you put the torque convertor back on, push and turn and push and turn to get it engaged and all the way back in all the detents and pump drive.
This is what I was drawing from... I thought it said gasket, but I was wrong.
So this is what you're talking about?
Also, is this going to make a huge ATF mess? (I want to be prepared if it is)
yes tommy that is the one, it shouldnt leak much if at all, that is the front pump there so without power the leaking should be okay. Franklin nailed it that seal often times gets torn when trying to manhandle the converter in and out. it is just good insurance to throw a few dollar seal in it. It will leak out of the back if you try and stand it up for easier access to the seal. good luck. Dan
