I want to know if it would hurt a 400 to run either open headers or manifolds with straight pipe without mufflers. I have heard it burns or hurts the valves in some way because of no back pressure. Anyone know about this? The motor is in a 1978 4x4 F250
it wont hurt anything besides you ears unless you run it straight open right out of the heads, then it will start bending/burning parts.
ive got opens on my 400 and it sounds good when you in the throttle. but its too loud to drive very long because it makes your ears ring, like the day after a rock concert.

I know what you mean, Im running mine with open headers, how true is it that you loose your bottom end torque with open headers? In a dyno simulator says it gets better... the faster the exaust gas gets out the faster mixture gets in...
my last 78 bronco had a rebuilt 400, hedman fenderwell headers with just a thrush turbo muffler. They ended right under my feet. Talk about LOUD! But with the man. 4 speed in first, that thing would growl off the line. But, it wasn't as loud as my old f150 with a y pipe, ex. mans. and a straight pipe all the way out the back....that caused me a few tickets.
