more power

i bought a 1980 1 ton dump with a 351m 4speed, trucks excellant but i had to rebuild the bed.
now the problems, it has a vibration in the engine that wont go away, when i got it the vibration was real bad and i noticed the spark plug wires were wrong so i fixed that, better but still vibrates, upon starting every now and again it will lock like the timing or wires are wrong but all check out, all cylinders are firing, just doesnt run right.
next is the egr valve, its partially hooked up, vacuum lines are missing on most of it, should i hook it up or delete it?its noncatalyst so i'm not worried about emissions, which way would run better?
i'm trying to get a little more power out of this thing, its no race truck, i have another engine for it but i want to rebuild it first and want to run this one until its done.
any help would be appreciated.

I would go ahead and invest in a 4bbl intake and carb for it if you are going to keep it. Then when you rebuild the other engine, you can swap the intake and carb on the new engine, even if it's a 400. The new aftermarket carb will let you get rid of the smog equipment without any worries about the engine running lean and pinging. I don't think they will bother you too much with emissions since it's a larger truck.

You also might want to get a new distributor, and install it. It also can be swapped into the new engine.

The reason I am recommending new, is I am assuming you want to get this thing going, and make some money with it, without tinkering with it all the time.
