Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) Problem

Let me start by saying that I've scanned through several related threads and did not find an answer, so if there's a thread out there already with my issue, please point in the right direction.

I have a 2005 F350 4x4 with the integrated TBC, and the controller does not "see" the trailer, lights all work, but not the brakes.. It worked fine on a recent trip to pickup a car, but on the way home the transmission took a dump, I was able to get to a local Ford Dealer were I was. After the transmission replacement is when the problem started. There is no error messages other than "Check Trailer" if I use the slider, and nothing when using the pedal. If I'd have noticed this before I was back on the road home, I would have gone back to the shop.

Thanks,

Gifford

Well a couple of things here. If it was hooked up to a trailer and doing that, there might be something that the controller is sensing that is going wrong with the trailer. I know that when I have something that is going to go out it gives me an annoying check trailer msg flashing and dinging and all that other annoying noises that it makes. If you don't have it hooked and it's giving you that error msg, then something might be unplugged(which could have happened during that tranny deal, or something could still be unplugged even if you still had the trailer hooked up and doing that. Other then that I can't be much help sorry.

Thanks for the suggestions, but when I got home from my trip, I hooked up to my race-trailer and a friends trailer too, and the problem persisted. My issue is somewhere within the truck. And as a test we hooked his 2007 F250 to the trailer I used on my trip, and there was no problem.

They could have unplugged a wire that sends that feed to the TBC and as such the TBC thinks that the trailer has a problem, but it's really a problem with the TBC. I remember after i got my headstuds done the wire had gotten loose and that caused a trailer fault msg on the display, but it didn't happen when I tried to manually engage the trailer brakes(moving the slider) like what happens in your case.

Well, my Ford dealer did not find any problems, and everything worked for them. So I went to where my trailer is stored and hooked up, and guess what? Everything works. My only guess as to what caused the problem, is the fact that I drove through some of heaviest rain I've been through since I've had the truck on my trip home, and I'll bet something got wet that shouldn't and something got crossed, but know it's dry and works again.

I hate electrical problems.

It could be a loose or bad connection at your truck. The flapper door that covers the 7 pin on the expedition broke so the pins are a bit corroded and I had the same problem. I ended up cleaning them up with some emery cloth and sandpaper and it seems to have fixed the problem. That reminds me though, I need to order a new part.
