Need Help please

Ok, I have a 2003 with a 3.0 motor and auto trans. Have 90,000 miles.
Here's the problem: At fwy speeds or going uphill when I give it the gas/or push it a little it knocks. It doesnt ping though. I back off the gas a little and its ok. Is it a Fuel pump? it does have a small whining in the tank. Or Injector maybe?

I guess I have to put it in the shop. And there's never been a Code.

knock has nothing to do with pump imo. It could be due to bad fuel, incorrect octane, or something to do with the ignition curve system (the computer should retard timing when it feels preignition). Something like a vac line or a sensor somewhere. I would suspect fuel quality related first.

Thats my uneducated guess. Someone else chime in.

Some 3.0 had no detonation sensors and when fuel oct. ratio is lower 85 it may nock at acceleration, but carbone deposits may increase compression up to 10-12 BAR, and this is compression for oct 91-93 gas.

You may try to decarbone engine ore to use oct 91-93 gas.

Try to press gas pedal smoothly to prevent pinging too.

yeah, was going to say as a test try putting in the next grade up gas and see if that changes it. Not a permant solve but may point you in the right direction.

Thanks guys

There is NO PING. This is a light ticking/knocking. No lose of power but scares you when it makes the noise. Only happenes when I push it a little..... at 50/70 mph on the fwy or going uphill. After I let off the gas it takes a second or two to go away, but then its ok. By pushing it I mean taching 3000.

Anyway its going in for service at the Ford dealers in the morning. Hope it only costs an arm and not a leg...Lol

P.S. I used seafoam already to de-carbon.

run a bottle of injector cleaner through it and check all of your vac hoses. also you might want to check the connections on your O2 sensors, also check the cam syncro- my buddy's started pinging really bad before his went.

It died

Well I went in to the Ford dealers this morning and got the bad news......both heads where bad! I looked at the computer print outs with there head mechanic and he said bank 3 and 5 are bad. And 2 banks on the other side where going bad. 2500.00 for both heads new installed.

I ended up trading in in on a new 08 Ranger. Extra cab, Sport. Im not paying 2500.00 on an 03 Ranger. I think a crate 3.0 motor is only 4000.00. Didnt seem worth it to me.
