own a 99 f-150 with triton v8, 25,000 miles that has developed a ping at hiway speeds. service people told me to use higher octane gas, but i bought a truck that is supposed to use regular gas, what is the deal?
I have a 98 150 4x4 4.6L SC my truck pings on the highway and every time I accelerate (at 2700rpm and up) its been to the dealer 4 times in the past 3 months and every time its another story: 1:We'll do a top engine clean, see how it is
2:Try higher octane gas
3:We didn't hear it (I think you need to turn up your hearing aid)
4today, and #3 was 2 days ago) use different gas
I already tried all of these and haven't seen any improvement. Actually it seems to be getting worse.
I know it's not an EGR problem. I even disassembled the throttlebody assembly and checked the passages. There are no codes either,(I have a Snap-On scanner). There is a TSB about Mass Air Contamination causing this, but not in my truck (Swapped one just for sake of arguement).
go to the dealer that deals with only trucks if u can. i find them the most knowledgable. the truck is designed for 87 octane. to have them try a higher octane is unacceptble. boyer ford trucks in minneapolis is the best far none in this region. good luck.
hunting season is upon us and its great to use my offroad in the fields. lock down the cargo and let er rip.
Glad to see I'm not crazy. My 1998 F150 w/4.6l recently developed a ping under certain conditions. It's especially bad when driving about 45 or 50 mph then opening the throttle wide. I guess I'll check all of the recommended items, EGR etc.
