460, starts hard cold?

i swapped a nissan pathfinder i had for an 84 f350 2wd crewcab today. has a 460, and auto tranny, 150,000 miles. it runs good, aside from a slight " stumble" or " hesitation" if you stomp the pedal to quick. oil pressure is good, comes up to temp ok, has pretty decent power. my only issue is when it's cold it tends to start hard.cranks and cranks, starts to catch. on and on. finally when it starts, let it warm up, runs good, shut it off, starts right back up. anyone have any ideas ?????

Fuel pump(s) not running when cranking the engine. You can test it by jumpering 12 volts to the rear small terminal on the starter solenoid and you should hear the pump(s) running. Then check the float levels ( sounds like they are low) and the accelerator pump (sounds like eithe a shot fuel shot or none at all).

With that many miles you might want to check out your spark plugs too. Excessive gap and it would be hard to start. Maybe a good tune up.

How well does it crank, fast or sort of slow? If slow, you need to check the battery voltage when cranking. If it is below 10.5 volts, your ignition may not function properly. Usually caused by a bad starter or battery.

it's carburated bear, is'nt it a mechanical fuel pump?

the guy i got it from said the carb was just rebuilt... so you may be onto something there

a short fuel shot or none at all, hmmm, maybe he did'nt rebuild everything, very possible , will look into that.

will do

bear it crank pretty fast so i dont think it's that. gonna look into float levels and plug gap today and go from there, thanks

My 1984 F-250 with 460 and C-6 has an electric pump in each tank. As far as I know all 1984s were electric pump(s). Some where along the line, Ford quit casting the 460 blocks with a mount for a mechanical pump.

wow, that's good to know bear. i fooled with it a bit earlier. when looking down throat, i open up throttle and nothing squirting, so i'm thinking accel pump.

question.... the electric pumps...... they either work... or they dont, correct ? when i turn on the key i dont hear anything, but if it was not working, i would think she would not run at all?? point also worth noting, it has dual tanks, but guy said switch/solenoid does not work. been using rear tank for years

The pumps have several power feeds. When cranking the 12 volts is from the starter solenoid. When running the power comes from the alternator. Key on and not running, pumps no run. There is also a inertia switch that shuts them off in and accident. It's down on the right side of the trans tunnel at the firewall in the cab.
