All oils break down over time with use. Sitting in the container they are fine. With use however eventually the modifiers they put in the oil to make it 15w-40 and any other friction modifiers break down and what you are left with is 15 weight oil. This is caused form the heat and shearing of use it's not a time thing it is a use thing.

Don't know about the 6.4 but the 6.0 manual gives the mileage to change oil and / or 6 months whatever comes 1st.

A different oil question for the do-it-yourselfers. Is it safe to say when doing both an oil and filter change to put in 15 new quarts or are you finding that some old oil stays in the tank and less than 15 quarts is needed? With my old 4.6 gasser which called for 6 quarts, I put 6 quarts in every time and never once measured the dipstick in over 100K miles and I changed every 3K miles.

I changed it this weekend 1300 miles I'm glad I did it was sooo black I know this is not unusual for a diesel but it had a strong fuel oder to it as well I also noticed a lot of very fine shavings on the drain plug magnet also not unusual for a new motor. But now I have peace of mind. I am still not sure why ford doesn't recommend changing the first oil at 1000 to 2000 miles because mine looked just like the oil that came out of my old 7.3 at 3000 miles.

My 7.3 gets changed at 3000 & the oil is still clear by then. I know this is probably overkill but I am a stickler on maintainence & this is cheap insurance for me. If your oil was that black with a fuel smell, that doesn't sound right.

The 6.4L PSD will have blacker colored oil due to the EGR valve recirculating exhaust gases. The top ring on the piston is higher than the 6.0/7.3 PSD engine. The 6.4L top ring will pick up more combustion carbon from the scrubbing near the combustion chamber.

I haven't worried about the color. Use CJ-4 oil and change every 5000 miles /8000 Km for Severe Duty and 10,000 miles/16,000 km for Normal Duty. I use the Severe Duty cycle as I tow a 5th wheel.
