Transmission Fluid Replacement
My question is how do I remove all of the fluid in the transmission so that I can replace it all with new fluid?
How much fluid is require?
Also what is the process for refilling the transmission i.e. how much do you put in before starting it up and when do you put in the rest of the oil, etc.?
Any help or reference would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You in advance.
Take the flywheel inspection cover off, and shine a flashlight up on the flexplate. You should see a big hole in the flexplate with a little pipe plug in it. Take this plug out, and it will drain the torque convertor. If you cannot see the plug, get someone to turn the engine till you see the plug come around. If you drain everything, it take I think 12 or 13 quarts of fluid.
If you are going to change the torque convertor, there is no need to drain it, it will only make a little bit of mess when you pull it out(after taking the tranny out). Some tin foil and duct tape will help control the oil coming out of the back of the tranny if you take the tranny out.
When ready for fluid pour in 4 or 5 qts then start in park or neutral & add the rest of fluid. If it was me I would start checking the dipstick after around8-9 qts. It should hold between 11-13 qts. if completely dry. (new converter & tranny) If you can't drain converter then remove tranny with converter in place. Then you can remove the converter but be prepared for fluid to come out.
