I was thinking about what kind of useful information I could contribute to this online community and I realized that some of you may own ipods would like to have a permanent place to play/ charge said ipod. Well here's how I did mine.
-dremal or drill (I only had a drill that's why it's not so smooth)
-RCA male adapters
-A stereo with an auxilery input
It's really pretty simple. First you need to make the cable you plan to use. This requires soldering the cat5 wires to the desired function pin on the iPod adapter the pin diagram can be found here http://pinouts.ru/Devices/ipod_pinout.shtml Then solder your RCA cables and 12V power and ground to required pins. (if you decide to add the charging function, you need to have an inline fuse to protect your ipod from surges.
Once this is done you need to remove the fold down console and gently remove the fabric by prting up the plastic strip around the rim (when its open). Next, remove the foam and drill out your hole. Figure out the angle the ipod connector needs to be at and glue/jb weld/etc. the connector in place (I hot glued it and its held up for about 1 1/2 years). Next you can the cable down across the metal frame of the console and cover it with the foam and then replace the cloth.
From there its simply a matter of running the cable under the carpet and plugging into the back of your stereo and piggy backing the power off of your fuse box.
Thats pretty freakin awsome, good work. My alpine head unit came with a little shelf under it to cover up the room that the was left over from the stock being so big so I just put mine in there.
