Well this is the second time fixing the spark plug blow out problem, known by many owning newer model vehciles with aluminum heads. Happened around 5,000 miles ago fixed it and then again today same cylinder did it again. Well figured I might as well go ahead and replace all the spark plugs (did so last time as well), the the socket used to get the coil pack off the head fell into the cylinder. Okay I thought no problem, tried the four pronged snake to try and fish it out, nothing. Grabbed the telescoping magnet, tried for a minute then just when the magnet picks up the socket while trying to fish it out, the end of the magnet breaks away and stays with the socket as I walk away pissed. Now I have both the socket as well as the magnet stuck in the cylinder. Anybody with any suggestions other than pulling the head off....?
Allright, here are a few suggestions:
if the socket/magnet aren't too deep can you use a long needlenose plier?
Can you wrap some chewing gum around a thin dowel, tape it on the dowel end and stick the gum down to the socket?
How bout a shop vac sucking up?
Good luck
Have you tried using a telescoping tool claw - the thing where you press and hold the button at the top and the 4-jaw claw stays open until you release it? Or is the space too narrow to pass it through?
Can you turn the engine toward TDC to bring the socket closer to the hole? Maybe then you can almost slide it out. I would drink lots of beer while trying this to keep you relaxed. J/K, (sorta) anyway do you have a mirror so you can see what you're doing? Put lots of lights up so it's well lit. Remember, it's better than removing the head. Good luck.
This is what I have done to retrive things where you can't reach. I find something small or flexible, vacuum line, brazing rod etc, then I fasten duct tape on it only the sticky side out, then fish out the lost piece. patience is a virtue, stay calm take your time and you will get it.hope all the ideas help. I also ask God to help me, and He does.
Turn the truck upside down and shake it until the socket falls out. Seriously, did the socket just fall into the COP hole(with spark plug still in place) or did the socket fall into the cylinder? If it's in the cylinder you're going to need the right tool and some luck, but if the plug is still in place you should just use a good pen magnet that doesn't come off. Every auto supply has them.
I guess since nick_cagle hasent updated us that he is still trying to get the socket out! Hopefully he doesnt have another magenet, bubble gum, and ducttape all lost in the hole to! LOL
