Which 289 do I have ?????
A friend of mine traded me a 289 which I will put into my 54 F100. It is said to be from the late 60s, mostly original with a hotter cam and forged pistons. I have a Offenhauser 360 (was sitting on some shelf for 15 years or so) and a brand new Edelbrook 600 (with all the stuff for the C4 installation). Not sure if I will fit hedders or stick to cast irons. Also still unsure about the ignition. However, I have the original points distributor.
Now my question. Is there any way to tell what 289 I have ? The block has the following number punched in: 8A219994.
Thanx for your help !
If you can afford it, ditch the Offenhauser and get a Edelbrock performer intake, The Offenhauser intake is on a shelf for a reason, but if that is what you have to wokr with, that will do, just do not expect big power.
A Pertronix Ignitor conversion is easy and perfect for stock point distributors, but check and see if the mechanical advance is working properly,If not, discard or use as a core for a rebuilt one.
... Thanx for your feedback and comments. Found the number and figured out that it is a '66 289.
As for the Offy 360. I agree, it may not be the best, but that's all I have right now. I may swop at a later time. Right now I need all my $$$ to buy stuff I don't have at all.
The distributor is a stock one. It does not look too good but should work. I was also thinking about using one of these Pertonix units. Have heard only good of 'em.

I've heard that another alternative to the stock 289 exhaust manifolds is to use 351 exhaust manifolds; slightly bigger ports and passages. (Also, they're quieter than headers.)
... thanx for your comments. Yes, I was thinking about hedders and a friend has a pair SB Ford hedders from his 55 F100. I still have part of the engine/trans x-member intact, but may have to take that out in order to get the clearance as these hedders are regular size hedders and not the shorties.
Things are a bit slower over here in Germany as we cannot just walk to the shop next door. Most everything has to come from the US. That is certainly not the reason why I am still not finished with this truck. I started almost 18 years ago.

One other possible ignition system to consider is late 70s style stock Ford Duraspark. $100 US will buy a rebuilt distributor, new coil and two new ignition modules. Not top brand components for that price but I think you would be pleased with the ease of installation and reliable hot spark. I suggest two modules only because it is a part that does fail. Especially the cheaper ones. Only thing else you need is a used wiring harness from a salvage yard (actually this is optional). Someone over here could pick one up for next to free.

... yes, have heard about that option, too. I guess for now I will stick to the stock points distributor (I have all the parts) and make that run. When all that is installed and the truck moves under own power I will then check my wallet and see what's left. Thanx.
