HEy i was wondering what i can do to my 289 HiPO to get more power out of it. I am doing a ignition conversion this week. Also can anyone tell what Hp and Torque came on a stock 65 mustang 289?Thanks
Don't know about the torque but a standard 289 2V had 200 HP, the 289 4V had 225 HP, and the 289 HIPO had 271 HP and 312 lb. ft of torque.
I don't know how far you want to tear into that engine but I believe the heads are a major weakness, and there are also much better cam grinds (especillay in a roller) that will idle smoother and make just as much (if not more) power than the 289 HIPO solid lifter cam.
Are you sure you have a HIPO - those engines are getting scarce so whatever you do keep all the parts you remove from it.
My suggestion, if you have a genuine 289 Hi-Po is to not modify it at all. These motors are really being sought after by collectors and folks building Shelby and GT clones. If you are set on upgrading it, replace the skinny stock oil pump shaft with an ARP shaft, swap a modern dual pattern hydraulic cam for the original solid lifter cam, install a set of Roush 180's or GT40-P's for both better flow and hardened seats, replace the stock 4bbl with a Road Demon or Holley Street Avenger and install a set of Tri-Y headers to keep a "stock" look.
