hey guys today a buddy at work was telling me about an axle he has laying around. it's a 78 3/4ton dana 44 complete with everything eve the disk brakes! all he wants is a case of beer for it and it even has 4.10 gears in it same as mine do u guys think it would be worth it? i no it's cheap bt do u think it'll hold up in my diesel?
With the 44, you're not gaining anything other than ditching the TTB (the D50 is a little bit stouter). It will hold up unless you are really hard on it if you wheel your truck.
You would be better off to find a 85-97 Dana 60 instead. That 44 will require some changes to put under your truck. A late model 60 is pretty much a bolt in.
That front end is definetely worth the case of beer, though. Bring it home.
If it has the right mounts to be a direct bolt in, for that price I'd take it. A straight axle D44 is better than a TTB D44 any day - just because it has fewer moving parts to wear out or break. If it would take fab work to fit then it probably wouldn't be worth it.
