I have two new Power Slotted Cryo front brake rotors coming next week, with Hawk ferro carbon disc pads for my 2001 F-250. I have neither the experience nor place to install them, and wonder what a fair price will be for a knowledgeable mechanic to do so. I can drive it OK, since the factory rotors have been turned once and it has 120,500 total miles on the truck. Most of those miles have been on pavement, and a good number were pulling a fifth wheel trailer.
I'd like to find someone who will take care not to warp the rotors, will clean up or replace the pins, and generally "do it right", not fast or in a hurry. What's that worth . . . ? I do not want to cheat anyone, nor get cheated!
Regrettably, I am close to Las Vegas, and it would be a major jaunt to chug along to the intersection of Oregon, California and Nevada! But I do appreciate your offer, and thank you very much!
Vegas isn't that far, haven't you been wanting to see the "beautiful" southern Oregon desert? The job is not that hard, if you have a regular socket set and half a day you can do it yourself no worries.
Thanks Super! Appreciate the compliment . . . but, realistically, . . . hey man, there was a time when I set up a '39 Merc for dirt track, installed a 59A block, relieved, bored and stroked, a Winfield screaming cam, two two barrels on an Offenhauser manifold, big tires and a half-*** roll bar. Bill France was not out of high school yet, and it was fun! The Flock brothers raced on the weekends, Junior Johnson came down from the Wilkes County hills of North Carolina, and it was lots of fun. (Still got the old Craftsman double decker tool box from those days)
Today, I have arthritis, a nice fifth wheel trailer to live in, the F250 to pull it and me around, and I am heading to Alaska next month. Need some brakes though, but didn't plan to see the southern Oregon desert this trip. Hope that doesn't hurt your feelings, and thanks again for the offer. I guess a young man could do the job in 4 or 5 hours, which would be OK with me. Not in a rush, want it done "right", and you're Number One so far!
You know, Oregon is on your way to Alaska
I just hate to see someone give a mechanic all that money for something fairly simple. 6 hours at the shop will cost you $300 or more, I'd only charge you a bottle of JD! (okay maybe two depending on how many times I have to swear to get the caliper bracket bolts out).
No hurt feelings here, I'd be nervous driving that far to let a stranger work on my truck too. Good luck finding someone to do it for you! Oh, and by the way, you are required to post pics of your truck- forum rules
Just to report that I found an experienced dude who will install the new rotors and pads on my truck tomorrow for $160 . . . seems fair enough, as he does operate a shop with all the gadgets (sockets, lift, jacks, air, etc.). That assumes the book time of 2 hours , which ought to be enough. If he does good, perhaps I'll leave a little JD on the bench.
