This is in Forest Lake, Minnesota -- not Berkley, CA
I just read that our local high school cancelled a planned event. A group of veterans was going to come and discuss various things about the military. I'm sure that they were mostly decorated Iraq veterans. The event was coordinated by our Michelle Bachmann -- a conservative Republican.
However, the ground rules were that there would be no political discussion. The purpose was to give the students a chance to meet these veterans, and discuss various aspects of the military.
Several parents called to state that they would demonstrate against this activity. The event was cancelled. It has since been moved to the American Legion. However, there will be little time for publicity, and attendance will probably be minimal.
I'm just aghast. Do these parents think that their children shouldn't be exposed to soldiers? Does the principal ( who cancelled the event), think that there would be violence in the parking lot? I just don't know.
they need to be tared and feathered. Proud of all out soldiers that are serving. My sister served in Kosovo,Afganistanand Iraq. She did a full year in Afgan the had less than a month before being sent to Iraq.
The Vets for Freedom National Heroes Tour is about supporting our troops, honoring their commitment, and rallying the country to complete the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. http://www.vetsforfreedom.org/heroestour/
Vets for Freedom is a nonpartisan organization established by combat veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Our mission is to educate the American public about the importance of achieving success in these conflicts by applying our first-hand knowledge to issues of American strategy and tactics in Iraq. http://www.vetsforfreedom.org/about/
I can understand some parents would object to their childrens' school being used by an organization with a political agenda. School is a place for learning.
Maybe moving it to the Legion Hall is a good idea. Nobody is denying the veterans their rights to promote their cause or people to go there and listen. School just isn't the place.
Was supposed to be presented to the Social Studies classes. IMHO this is where kids are supposed to learn about things like war.
Here was a chance for the kids to hear from people who had been there. Premise was that it was to be non political. Certainly the teachers/administrators could have called foul if it went beyond reporting the things that they had seen.
Nobody said that they couldn't later present a group of vets or others who opposed the war. I would have had more respect for the parents if they called for a 2nd presentation by another group.
Wonder what the media reaction would be if they cancelled a group like Amnesty International .
Anyway, the VFW event was well attended -- by the public, and by the 50 students who got permission to skip class to attend the event.

I would not complain if Veterans were going to speak to my children.
HOWEVER>>>Parents can teach their own children anything they want about society, politics, science, religion, etc. The schools should teach basic thinking 101, and that means staying away from politics, religion and sex.
