Fuel gauge misreading?

My fuel gauge which seems stuck at half full regardless of the actual gas in the tank. I thought it might be the sending unit on the pump which I believe is isn the tank. As a test I thought I would let the gas run down a bit and see if my low fuel light came on. It did. That makes me wonder if maybe the problem is actually the fuel gauge and that the pump and sending unit might be fine? Anyone have any experience with this?? How tough is it to change out the fuel cauge? Can it be done as a single gauge or do I have to switch out the whole console of gauges?

Thanks for any help out there.

Tom

Does the gauge drop to E when the key is off?

Yes. The needle just sits at half and then drops when I shut off the engine.

sounds like the ground is bad at the tank. try feeling around on top of the tank till you find the sensor plate. there should be a wire that goes in and one that connects to the outside of the plate. try moving this wire around. You will need to drop the tank down if the wire feels good. If droped, clean good and ckeck the float, it may be filling up with fuel
