Hey guys, i have a 93 f150 w/ 302 and the aod tranny. i recently did a complete ignition tune up, im running the MSD 6a control module with the super conductor wires along with the msd cap and rotor and a brand new motorcraft ignition control module. now i called the boys at msd tech support to see what plugs to run in it and they recommend running a base copper core plug 2 steps colder so i bought champion rc9yc plugs. the problem i am having is at cruising speed with a low rpm if i step on the gas to pick up the speed it will start to miss or studder it usually happens when it goes into overdrive about 45mph (1600 rpms) and will continue until about 65 mph (2000 rpms). i tried to see what it would do with stock heat range plugs which are rv15yc4 and i have the same symptoms. Please help me!!!
I don't understand using the Motorcraft module with the MSD. I would run the MSD by itself. Is your distributor the magnetic pickup type like the late 70's? I am not familiar with your year's setup. Was it running ok before the change?
The motorcraft ignition module is the one that is mounted on the driver side fender. i replaced it because the truck has 90,000 miles on it. the msd box i have is the 6A series which you plug the wires into the factory harness going to the coil and then plug the wires coming out of the msd box into the coil. it was running fine before i did the tune up, since i put the msd on it and did the tune up acceleration got faster and mpg got better too, its just after the engine warms up to operating temp it starts to studder or miss only in overdrive between 45mph and 65mph. I've worked on ford engines for years but i have never ran across a problem like this.
Sometimes (feel free to correct me if im wrong) those aftermarket ignitions are sensitive to the parts you use. I dont know that truck exactly but is the coil powerfull enough to put out the juice that ignition requires? Also are the wires pre assembled or did you have to crimp them yourself. It might be worth checking the resistance to make sure there isnt a bad connection somewhere. After that i guess the next logical thing would be to check your fuel pressure if you have a high speed shudder. sorry if this doesnt help or i was incorrect somewhere.
Sorry i forgot to mention that the i also bought the blaster tfi coil and the wires are the msd wires that are already premade. checking the fuel pressure is a good idea, i dont know why i didnt think of it i'll do the test tomorrow and post the results. thanx matt
