diff choices

I Got a 9" with ls and 4:10 gears as part of a trade. My 85 300 with a few bolts ons, 4spd and 31*10.50s has an open 8.8 with 3.06:1 ratio. Should I swap in the 9 and swap 4.10s into the front?
Thanks,
Sean

4.10's are going to be a little steep for the 300 and 31's.

You'd be better off with 3.54's with that combo IMO.

So should I sell the 3rd member and buy a complete 3rd members with a more desireable ratio?

It all depends on what you are going to do with the truck. If you are going into mud up to the doors, then you possibly could use the 4.10's. If you do mainly street driving, it will be a dog, but you could keep what you have now. Around a 3.50 would be a good overall ratio with those tires though. And 3.50 is a common ratio. You will be looking for a 3.50 for the 9 inch, and 3.55 for the Dana 44 up front.

If you went with the 4:10's I would at least step up to a 33" tire to offset the difference.

I would go with the 4:10's because you never know down the road you may add larger tires.

I do plan on putting 33' on it but I have brand new MT on it now. It is not a daily driver, but it won't be a mudder either.

How should I approach the front diff? just buy new gears or could I leave them 3.06 for a little while till I have more money? I wont be using 4wd unless I get stuck anyway.

As long as you dont use the four wheel drive you will be alright until you get the money to do the front.

Ok, what about if I get stuck and tires are spinning, with the fronts spinning less will it be bad? or am I screwed?

Well AS LONG as the tires are spinning it wont do any damage, but the second they catch something, it could be bad news.

Actually the fronts will be spinning faster. It will put a lot of strain on the transfer case and driveline, even in the mud. 4.10 is a really big difference compared to ones you have now.
