My son got his first car from his grandmother with some problems. I intend on servicing the transmission this week end hoping it will help. It is a 1997 Explorer with the 4.0 SOHC and 5 speed automatic and 4X4. Once you turn it off then go to leave it takes it forever to engage 1rst gear and move, doesn't matter how long it has set and cooled. Once 1rst engages it has to run up high in the RPM's to shift too 2nd. After it gets going everything seems to work good.
I am not sure what tranny it is, thinking it is the 5r55e? I have read on the valve body gasket fix, but not to sure this is it, it does engine brake in 1rst, and the only shift problem seems to be from 1rst to 2nd.
Any help would be appreciated, he has high expectations of this vehicle.
My broke butt never has the money for a mechanic, just most of my mechanical knowledge is on older less electronic equiped vehicles. I have installed shift kits in older th350 chevys, not to sure how different the vb is in this truck. A buddy of mine's exfather in-law used to work at a transmission shop, he told me it sounds like a front pump, but I am not to sure how familiar he is with this tranny.
Take some time and read the entire tech thread on the 5R55E valve body upgrade. It's not that difficult of you've turned a wrench before. There are great instructions and discussions in that thread.
It won't cost you much to do the VB upgrade yourself. It's a good, inexpensive place to start.
