I have an '86f150 4.9 2wd auto with a bad engine. I have a 3.8 from a 2000 Mustang 5sp. The exhaust, driveshaft, fuel and cooling are no problem. What do I need to know to finish it. What auto tranny will fit and work?
What's existing in the truck will probably work. The bellhousing pattern should still be Windsor pattern on the 00 3.8.
Just FYI, the 3.8 was factory installed 82 and 83 in the F100's, so, mounts etc are available. You're actually in for alot less fab work than you probably think you are.
Wiring harness? Do not expect the 2000 fuel injection harness to plug in. I would suspect you will have to run a carb on the newer engine. Can that be done? I haven't a clue on that one. If you are trying to keep the 2000 fuel injection system, good luck. It's OBDII, so it's going to be very touchy and lots and lots of wiring.
look up supersix motorsports for carb stuff. Otherwise, plan on all the engine managment stuff, harnesses computer etc. The auto that would have been on that motor in that year would have been a 4r70w, but that ecm being from a 5sp would not have the controls for it and you would need an a/t ecm. from the Stang. also the 00 3.8 does not have a dizzy, just a cam sensor where the dizzy would go. I also have a 99 3.8 mustang too as well as the books and manuals for 99-04... Dont expect much power wise unless you do a lot of work to the motor. That engine is rated 190 fwhp stock, and I think around 150-160 tq, and very slow to turn up. The good thing is in 99 they solved the head gasket plauge by using the thicker SC style head castings.
