Looking at a PSD.

I'm eyeing up a PSD that a neighbor of mine has. It's an old body style. Not sure what year it is, but it has the PowerStroke sticker under the emblems. They guy bought the truck new and took great care of it. He recently bought a Range Rover and I am going to inquire as to whether he is willing to sell the truck.

Does anybody know of any common ailments I should look for when I look at the truck? What would a good price for a great condition truck like it? It's 4x4 PSD white with fairly low miles I'm sure.

I would like to glean as much information from you guys as I possibly can.

My main questions are as follows:

1) What do they get for fuel milage?

2) Is there any sort of problem specific to this era of Ford truck?

3) What is a good price for a PowerStroke, 4x4, F-350 with low miles on it in GREAT condition.

If he is a neighbor and your on talking terms and he is willing to sell the truck start by looking inside the cab for the installation of aftermarket gauges and or other accessories. These are good upgrades and fairly costly.

Under the hood, if he will let you pull the boot off of the front of the turbo and check the inlet vanes, does it turn freely?, does it have movement front to back?, side to side?, are the vanes chipped, cracked, bent and do they look as if they have been sand blasted?

Look in the valley, beneath the turbo for oil leaks, work your way up to the front, still in the valley looking for leaks.

Check the engine oil, is it clean, up to the full mark? Ask the owner if he has maintenance records. Have the owner start the truck while you look at the exhaust pipe. Did it start right up? Did it smoke? was it white, blue. black and how long did it last?

Drive it, does it shift smoothly, if it's a stick did the gears grind? Does the clutch feel mushy? If it's and auto could you feel slippage during shifts?

Then tell us the year, how many miles it has, has it been used for towing? Bumper, 5th wheel, goose neck? Front tires, are they wearing evenly?

That should be enough to get you started, OH yeah, put it in four wheel and listen for ang odd noises.

Good luck,

Rog

Well for my 97 psd with 79000 miles I paid $11,700 for it. Truck is in almost "mint" condition. Not even any real scratches in the bed. Just to give you an idea of what a really clean truck can run. My mileage is about 18-19 highway with the mods I have
