OK, i know i have a few posts floating around in here, but here's another good question that i cannot find much online about.
My engine guy mentioned that a tow cam would get me some more hp (like 25 or so) more than the stock cam in my 351w.
What, exactly, is a tow cam?
Is it literally a cam to help lower the RPM range for trucks that need more low end torque for towing? If so, he said it shouldn't effect the top end, but this doesn't seem possible.
Can anyone help me understand how this is possible, please?
tow cam-RV cam.it is a cam that is designed to make torque and hp from
approx 1500-4800 rpms.it will give you more hp,how much depends on brand, grind.it is a step up from a stock cam. i have one in my 74 f-100 302 and like it.they are not designed for real high performance and most can be used with stock springs, lifters etc.they are kinda like what would be used in a marine engine.hope this helps you.
Usually they do have a little more lift, for more bottom end torque they need to close the intake sooner. Cam may have more advance in it, lube profile may be more aggressive to lift quicker and close sooner. Less over lap and/or more lobe center line degrees help bottom end. Possible a shorter duration cam by comparison.
