Ok, I changed my heater core and filled up the cooling system when I got done in my 2000 F250. I took out 5 gallons and put back in 4 gallons of new coolant mixed 50/50 which filled the tank. I ran the engine till it just got to the normal operating temp but the top radiator hose and the lines to the heater core stayed cold I think the thermostat was still closed. I pulled the heater hose off the top of the water pump and coolant came out so I know the heater core has coolant in it. Do I just need to run the engine longer? Is there any risk of engine damage if it is missing a gallon of coolant? I read in the manual that if it gets too hot it will shut its self down. Is this true? I love this truck too much to wreck the engine.
Welcome to FTE. I would just run it around the block once and then recheck. Sometimes idling doesnt make the coolant flow as good as running it. Make sure you have the heater on and fan on high when you do it. What coolant did you use?
Thanks for the advice. After supper and when I cooled off a bit I went out and drove it some more and finally did get the thermostat to open and the heater to work and got another 1/2 gallon of antifreze in her so it should be ok. It's 24 degrees F here (NE Iowa) so it just took longer to heat up plus working in the heated shop faked out the computer so it wouldn't do the cold startup procedure with the exhaust backpressure valve. My shop is 140 miles from home so I wanted to make sure it would be ok before I took off. I just put the green antifreeze in it so I will have to put in the additive when I get back home. I also discovered that my radiatior cap is not maintaining system pressure like it should so that will also get replaced when I get back.
When you did the heater core did you replace the themostat? If you need to try this one http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ion=PRODSEARCH Definatly would suggest. What kind of coolant did you use? If you used the green stuff you will need to chack the SCA levels every oil change or so.
