i looked at a guys 2000 tonight. he wanted to try my superchip off of my 97, so i put it on his truck. he loved the power, but is looking for something to up his mileage, and needs HELP. he gets 9 MPG. 2000 model, 7.3 (obviously), auto, dont know gear ratio. he has a 150 gallon fuel tank, and an assortment of tools in the bed. he lets it idle alot when he's blowing straw, ect. but still, 9 mpg? so i looked at it. no DTC's, but.... i popped the hood and its gunked up (like dirt/dust) around all of his spyder boots. also, when you get on the throttle hard, it makes a bad whoosh noise when it shifts, and feels like its loosing boost, and takes awhile to spool up. i told him to tighten those boots ASAP and see if it helps. sound like a correct diagnosis? also, he has a "jury rigged" intake, and straight pipe exhaust.
If its a dually or a 4;10 rear end thats not to far off. He'll gain a couple mpgs just buy running that chip, and whatever the intake is make sure the filters clean/new.
A "jury rigged" intake sounds like a good place for a damaged turbo. Boost leaks, dirty air filter, damaged turbo, and idling will all reduce mileage. Sounds like you are looking in the right places, just need to make sure he is filtering the air going through the engine.
oh, its a name brand filter, and secured good. he took i think a k&n from auto zone and clamped it onto the tube going to turbo, and took off the top of his air box. its a single wheel extend cab short bed 4x4. sounds like loose boots dont it? since theres dust all around them and when it shifts its like a ch-ch-ch-ch-shhhhhh. not an even spool down like my dads 2002.
