Probably about a 17.2....

The 97-03 pickups had 235-255 horsepower (flywheel) with the 5.4 and weighted right around 5000 lbs; the '04 up had 300 hp and weight jumped to 5500-6000 lbs. Almost the same power to weight ratio as the old Chevy 454SS...or 20 lbs for each horsepower, which is the mark of a slow vehicle. A stock Honda Civic or Ford Focus has 130-150 horsepower, weight around 2800 lbs, right around the same as the big trucks.

If you want to go fast, get an old 3000 lb Mustang with 300 horsepower, gives you a power to weight ratio of 10 lbs per horsepower, and now you're talking. The truck would need 500-600 horsepower to run like the Mustang in a straight line, and the only way to get that is a turbo or supercharger. But if you put the supercharger on the Mustang....

A buddy of mine who builds kit Cobra replicas just had his new toy at the Autorama--it's a Factory 5 Cobra replica with a supercharged 4.6 in it. Probably about 2300 lbs, and maybe 400+ horsepower at the rear wheels. That sucker is gonna run.

A truck is NOT a performance vehicle, unless your definition of performance is a rumbly exhaust and sitting really high up while burning a lot of gas.

I'm agreeing with George in my own way to. I'm on a secluded area road where there's no problem if things get out of control. I want to know what the limits are and what to expect. When the roadis wet I don't even use low gear. Next if wheel/tire replacement to hold it down.

Give it time. I've had my truck 6 years now and just started into it. Get a tuner and start having fun. I'm getting Pro Racer software to 'tinker' some more.

Today on Trucks! they had a episode that compared the old lightning and the chebby 454ss. They tested both and the chebby ran like a 7.6 0-60 and a mid/late 15 sec 1/4 mile. Which is faster than my truck, i believe i run like a 10sec 0-60. Maybe i will try it tomorrow and report back what my 0-60 time was..

i used my edge to 1/4 mile my truck, and with it untuned (still running the 4.6l computer in it) my best time was a 16.5. Thats with 32" mud tires to, also my best reaction time was about .6 seconds... i know im kinda slow...

I think 16s would be very easy for a good tuned motor.... and if you are lucky to have the 5.4l reg cab shortbed 4x4 i bet it would go much quicker

Well i tried my 0-60 this morning.. my best was just under 10sec. The 10sec one was after my fan clutch disengaged, i ran over a 11sec with the fan clutch locked up. I need to find a different fan clutch, i bought a new one because my old one went bad....now the new one doesnt work right(its always "locked" up)

Get an electric fan and gain some horsepower.

It's not necessarily a bad thing if you can't just easily roast the tires. It means you have good traction.

REALLY!!

hey, it's only numbers..... my little 4.6 does everything I've asked it to do, and keeps smiling at me.

Tell that to all the Porsche, Vette, Camaro and Mustang drivers that can't keep up with a Lightning on the drag strip or the road course.

A Lightning ceases to be a truck; it is a hot rod with a truck body, just as a Hemi Roadrunner was no longer a Belevdere taxicab. (I had one of the former). How much weight can you carry in the bed? Pull a big trailer? Just checked the specs and the Lightning is 4670 lbs...with almost 60% of the weight on the front wheels (almost a whole Mustang's worth).

With enough work, you can make anything fast, but most of the yoyos around here with loud trucks are driving loud, slow, overweight "look at me" pigs.

....and I am not up on the Lightning performance specs, but would seriously doubt that it would beat very much real performance stuff on a road course, especially a tight one. A 4700 lb truck autocrossing? hee hee... (Likewise, my Hemi Roadrunner, manual steering, manual drum brakes, was a joke turning corners.) And take the Lightning engine, put it in a Mustang or Cobra kit car, and then compare....as Colin Chapman said, one of the best routes to performance is "adding lightness" to a vehicle.

George

It cant pull a "big trailer" but it is rated to tow 5000lbs. Its also rated at about 1000lbs in the bed...Im sure its real low mostly because of the lo-profile tires.
Its also pretty easy to get more power out of them, with pulley and tune changes.

I went to the junkyard and bought a twin e-fan setup out of a Windstar van for $50. It fits almost like it was designed for these trucks. Fed power out of the distribution block under the hood, used 2 relays, one tied into a/c clutch for low speed fan and one tied into a $18 thermostatic fan controller from Autozone to bring in the high volume fan if it gets hot. Works like a champ and I don't think I have $75 in the whole setup.
