If you just mount it in the window space the top half of the door will flex going over rough spots. Interstate 10 in Florida like to have ruined the door before I realized what was going on..
Thanks for the warning. That's why I bought an extra door -- so I could beef it up as necessary without worrying about messing up the original one.
I'm thinking this'll hold her.
Now I need to paint it all blue (at least on the outside). I'm not going to worry about the interior cosmetics until everything checks out, and maybe not even then?
Looks Good! Next time I'll get you to do mine!!
Seriously, thats a good job there. Never thought about bracing it like that on the inside. Looking forward to pics inside and out of the finished product.
Due to the recent skyrocketing fuel prices. Which I don't see ever going to go down significantly. My Wife and I have decided to just get rid of our motor home and just use the van for all our travels from now on. With the travel trailer when we have company and when just us just the van and our enclosed utility trailer.
New to site. Had 1997 E-350 5.4L. Always got 12/13 mpg in town. Bought new 2004 E-350 5.4L same van same gears. I get 10 mpg. Same load going same places. Question? Can this engine be forced to run in the limp home mode. It has way more power then I need, I need gas mileage. I drive it like an 80 year old now. HELP
1993 E350 5.8l E40D 4.10 gears roof racks with ladders, 2000lbs cargo, all city, foot to floor light to light 10 MPG
2000 E350 7.3 PSD 3.55 gears same load, same city, same foot, 12.2 MPG
2003 E350 5.4l 3.55 gears same load, same city, same foot, 11 MPG
towing a 8.5x16x 7.5 trailer, I get 8 MPG with the '93, the '03 and my wife's '97 Expy 5.4 4x4. The PSD is gone.
My highway mileage is always the same as the city because I have the hammer down and the roof racks and ladders kill mileage at speeds over 50. The roof racks eat about 1.5 MPG.
My e 150 conversion hi top with a 4.6 and 3.55s gets about 16 or so on the highway. 14 to 15 in town. I expected better from such a small motor. Oh, i do about 70-72 on the highway with an light foot.
By way of comparison, my work van is a '95 dodge 2500 conversion with the 5.9 and 3.54s. It has between 800 and 1200 lbs cargo on any given day.
My job requires about 250 miles per day (about 200 hiway. The rest ismostly rural roads)
i get 17 to 18 mpg combined average. Again with a light foot.
If i go 80-85 that drops to 14.5mpg. Towing an open trailer weighing about 3500lbs, i get 15 hiway 12 in town.
This is calculated over 45k miles. Never got below 17
It seems as though fords don't do as well mileage wise?
Does the lack of a catalytic converter explain it?
I think it would be of interest when discussing gas mileage, to know whether mpg's are with or without 10% ethanol in the fuel. In my area of WI almost all stations sell only 10% blended gas, but as you move around the state you find areas where NO EHTANOL is advertised. I believe my mileage improves by 1 or more mpg without ethanol, but have no real documented evidence.
2008 E-150, 5.4, 3.55. 10% eth. 16 hwy, 14 combined, 12 towing 3500#. I believe I could stretch the hwy figure to 17 with more conservative driving. We've only had this one for 3 months.

Your hightop does it. They reduce fuel economy by quite a bit, as they are a huge source of drag. My 95 E150 with the 351W gets 15mpg combined, but I am running larger tires, and about 19mpg hiway, so long as i keep it around 55-60.

I figured that, but didn't think it would be THIS drastic.
i barely have the gas pedal pushed down at 65 (maybe a bit more than an 1/8" to a 1/4"at most)
If i did 55-60mph, i'd easily get 20+ mpg. I'd also get run off the road or shot! Lol
I have a 99 E-350 ext 5.4 3.55 gears and gets 15, I once got 17 but it was all down hill from TN to FL, the trick is to find a speed where it'll not shift around, which I found is 72 MPH, if you try 65, it "will" drop in to second on the slightest hill and you can hear the gas sucking out of the tank!
i just came back from a 3200 mi trip from Wisc to NJ to No Carolina to Wisc. Averagaged 15.2 for the whole trip. I keep it at about 65mph for best mileage. 2002 Quigley 5.4 w/3.55 gears. About 7400 lbs with me and "stuff". I have a Scangage and try to watch the Throttle Position Sensor mode...i try and keep it as low as possible; around 30

Does anyone know if the van can be ran in limp mode? Will it work? Does it have enough power? Anyone at all have you tried this. Will the 5.4 have enough power to run like a V-4. If I could get 14-15 MPG it would make me keep this van instead of down sizing. PLEASE help!!!
You need to understand, those designed to do so shut off the injection and open valves to cool those cylinders, it's not something a mechanic can replicate, they are engineered to do you.
