Well, I got about 80% of my new 4" duals installed today- what a pain in the arsenal this job has turned out to be! I spent nearly all day at it and still couldn't get done... embarassing. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to situate the two clamps for the tail pipes- called the company I bought from and they sent me some photos but it's not helping much. Grrr... how come the "simple" jobs always end up taking so dang long to do?
Chase, it could be worse, the place i bought my duals sent me exhaust for a gmc 6.6. Had to wait another 2 days for the right ones, what brand did you go with?
Chase, Did the exact same thing two nights ago. Wound up not having a tool to drop the spare tire. So 6 hours later (at 1AM) i decided to "screw it" and run her straight piped with the last pipe being the muffler delete. I agree with you, a real PITA when it comes to the back of the truck - hangers, spare tires, CLEARANCE ISSUES! Take a deep breath and regroup tomorrow. Thats my plan and really all i can do. Good luck!
Sleep on it. I once spent I don't know how many hours trying to figure out the belt configuration on a Puegot 505 STi turbo diesel that I bought in Montana...with the engine totally tore apart and lying in the trunk...with 3 big coffee cans of bolts, fittings etc. This was in the early 90's and the internet was just starting up...and pictures and manuals for the car was pretty hard to come by in Butte Montana.
Anyway, after several hours of trying to find the correct configuration (it was the last step of about a month's worth of finding parts from Ca and Wa, collecting any Puegot diesel info I could find etc and rebuilding the engine) I finally gave up, beat up and called it an evening. I mean for hours and hours I stood there with 4 or 5 belts trying to find the correct fitment and configuration. Anyway, gave up and called it an evening.
Next day, reluctantly walked out to the garage to try to finish the last step...and lo' and behold, I took one look and suddenly it all made sense. 1981 Puegot Turbo Diesel...built like a tank but it was a luxury car thru and thru...and I ran sales calls all over western Montana...even taking the wife and children thru Utah to Alamosa Co to my father's on vacation, then up to Cheyenne, over to Minneapolis to see my brother, then back to Butte Montana...what a car! I wish I could find another one today...I'd buy it in a heart beat.
Anyway...consciously we may take a break or call it quits...but sometimes the subconscious continues to sort the puzzle out for us.
I went with a Diamond Eye system, $425 shipped in aluminized. I think the kit is fine, the problem lies with the installer I'm afraid! I'm hoping to at least get the second over axle pipe in this morning, I'm almost convinced they sent me the wrong clamps for the tail pipes. I'll try and get photos up a little later.
PS Chris- it has nothing to do with the inlaws, I swear
My photos
One thing I noticed right off was how much more clearance their photos show between the axle and pass. side pipe. I also noticed (though the photos don't show it well) that my system seems to drop at the muffler which doesn't seem right. I screwed around with things for quite a while and still couldn't get it right- I ended up just pulling the ^%&*^ muffler out and it will be straight piped until I can figure this out. Something is just not right, though I'm not quite sure what it is yet. I also snapped a pic of the DP- notice how close it is to the spring bracket bolt. Should I be worried about this?
I'm no exhaust expert but here's a few things I think I noticed. Your set up was listing to the passenger side, but I noticed you didn't have it clamped to the muffler so no big deal. If you look at the hanger bracket by the muffler yours is a skinny bracket that appears to be longer than the one in their photo. This might explain why your muffler points down.
Also if you look at their pictures from the bottom where the pipe goes around the spare, their pipe appears to have a sharper bend. It's hard to tell the angle from the photo, but look where their back pipe clamps onto the curved pipe. Their clamp appears to be horizontal where yours will be at more of a 45 deg angle.
Chris- the kit included 2 pieces of straight pipe, one had a slight bend in it (shows that way in the install instructions too) so that is why you are seeing it pointed slightly sideways. I also noticed that the muffler bracket in the photos looked shorter than the one I have. I sent the photos to Diamond Eye, I'll see what they have to say. I'm almost sure I've got some wrong bent pipes somewhere in there (I know I'm not this stupid! )
Ran the truck today with just a straight pipe- the 4" straight pipe has a lot more rumble than the stocker!
