I found a good deal on a 99 F150 5 speed 4x4 with the 4.2L V6. What kind of fuel economy can I expect? Will it be any better than a 4.6 or 5.4? Are there any known problems with this truck. I know some had cracks in the doors. Does this 5 speed have the oil loss problem like some of the Rangers? Does the V6 model come with the 8.8 front and rear like the V8 models? Do they come with a 1354 T case? Thanks for your input. RB
The 4.2L V-6 in the early year trucks (97 - 99) were known for hydrolock problems. Gas mileage will be in the neighborhood of 15 - 16 MPG average. My 5.4L has a liftime average of 14.3 MPG. What is a good deal? Good luck!
1. Rust on the bottom inside door seam
2. Have ball joints been done?
3. Has trans fluid been changed regularly? (prevents torque converter shutter)
4. Has anti-freeze been changed regularly (helps preserve the life of the heater core, which is a PITA to change)
5. Have plugs been done?
The hydrolock problem that KRman02 is referring to is a result of bad intake manifold gaskets. If they've been changed, or if you change them, the concern pretty much goes away. The 4.2L should ahve the 8.8 differential.
