I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark that I should not see green coolant on the tip of an injector I pulled to replace....along with a teaspoon or so of the same down in the hole. I assume this means cracked fuel cup/sleeve or whatever. It is a long story but before I make the decision whether to burn the truck or simply lose it, I wanted to know
a) would this problem cause a CCT failure on that cylinder and rod knocking sounds .....
b) where can I get tools for cup replacement....
c) what is the chance that this is my only cup failure?
My rod knocking noises just started recently (after a 2nd set of re-mans resolved an apparent o-ring issue(s)) I only have the knock in the #2 hole so I'm assumming that now with a 'new' Alliant in that hole...and still a knock that the failed cup is the problem. I know you can't replace the 4 back cups without pulling the engine or the heads....so I'm hoping this is the only one and might replace the one next to it for the heck of it.
I know I have some fuel or oil in the coolant but had it pinned as tranny fluid. Now I know better. Coolant level has dropped very slowly and I never have any smoke. Makes me think that this cup might be the only one.
I don't envy you at all.
I would pull all eight injectors and pressure test, then make a decision about whether to pull the heads or not.
Fix it right the first time and be done with it.
I just did this myself. The first thing I would recomend is doing all eight. You have to remove all the injectors anyway. The second this is you can do all eight in the truck. I did it with a 1 1/4 inch tap and alittle welding to make the tool i needed. I welded some threaded rod to the end of the tap. Then I made a bridge across the rocker bolts with hole in the middle. The rod goes through the hole and you use a nut to make it work like a puller. Last I sanded a piece of hard wood in the shape of the cups to set the new one. I gave the tool I made to a friend at the local ford shop, but if I can help with anything let me know.
