OK I've been fighting this one for a while. Upon start up, I get the IDM relay chattering. I had my batts load tested (OK). Checked all engine grounds (OK). I have been carrying a jumper to cross the relay when the truck simply wont start.
Finally, I found the cause. The IDM relay closes through the PCM. I found 26K ohms on the ground through the PCM. I ran a temporary wire from the IDM relay ground to the Neg terminal on the battery and the problem went away.
I am absolutly certain that the issue is in the PCM.
MY QUESTION:
Can rechipping the truck repair this or do I need to buy a new PCM and get it chipped by Jody (just cause I want to)?
My truck is a 2000 w/ 4" exhaust (turbo back), 6637 mod, ccv mod, otherwise stock.
Did you test continuity to the PCM plug?
What I am saying is: are you sure it's it not in the wiring harness?
.
Good idea on the jumper wire to get the truck rolling again.
Thanks Kwik, I found the high resistance between the relay socket and the pcm ground location. It is possible that the harness is the problem but the resistance reduced to 42 ohms after a couple min. (think when the glow plugs turned off).
I recommend pulling the PCM out and checking the wiring harness before you put any money down on a new PCM.
.
I see that you live in VA, where they like to salt the roads. If any of the weather packs leak a tiny bit, that salt corrosion will travel up the conductor of the wire for several feet without changing the appearance of the insulation on the outside.
It's extremely effective at raising resistance to flow.
Thanks again Kwik, I have the temp wire installed for now so I can get around. I will check that out as soon as I can find my garage floor. I am also thinking to send Jody an e-mail to see if he has seen this before.
