Oil slinger

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-13-03 AT 06:53 PM (EST)]Should there be an oil slinger on the crankshaft in front of the cam drive sprocket on my '89 F150 5.0L. The rebuild book I'm using is somewhat dated and makes reference to one. I'm not finding one in my parts-to-be-reinstalled inventory.

I'm pretty sure there is. On the older ones there is so I don't see why the new ones wouldn't. I've never completely rebuild a newer windsor.

Some do, and some do not have oil slingers.

If I remember right - if there is a ledge inside the timing cover (that protrudes over the top of the crank gear when installed) then it does not require a slinger.

Ledge = no slinger
No ledge = slinger

Mine has the ledge. It's been a year since I tore down the engine so my memory has faded. The "Rebuilding Small Block Ford Engine" book shows reference to a slinger but the Chilton book I have doesn't describe or illustrate one. Trying to make sure cause the shop cats may have batted it off the parts table. It's hell trying to find parts when ya got 6 cats with nothing better to do than swat around my bolts and stuff!!
