Looking to get a cat back since I have a hole in the muffler and the rest of the pipe and hangers don't look too good. I bought the truck used and I think it was a boat hauler in salt water, so lots of rust on many things. The u-bolt saddle near the cat has completely rusted away. Does the the system literally start right after the cat or after the 2 ft sleeved portion? Also what is the sleeved portion? Looks to be a heat shield for the carrier bearing. Thanks, JIM
The Flowmaster kit replaces the muffler and back. You cut the old muffler off right at the inlet. The new FM system comes with a collar to connect the new muffler to the old pipe. The exhaust from the front of the muffler to the front of the truck remains.
The clamps that come with the Flowmaster kit are junk. I bought all stainless clamps and custom made my own clamp/hanger to replace the FM one. My clamp in front of the cat is rusted pretty good too. I'm just going to fab a new one using a stainless clamp and some stainless rod.
I was hoping for a little more in front of the muffler as the next joint in the system upstream appears to be leaking. I guess a couple of good clamps will hold it together. Thanks.
Did you get your clamps local to you or did you order them from someplace on the web?
The exhaust on your truck must have been altered. The stock system is all welded from the manifold back except for the triangular flange in front of the converter. A gasket goes between the flange to seal it.
I have an aftermarket cat and headers on my truck so I had to replace the section of pipe between the converter and the muffler. The Flowmaster cat-back kit is designed to bolt right in place of the stock exhaust.
