Unbelievable............

ok, just blowin off some steam here.

yesterday was the third dealer i went to. i was the ONLY customer there. drove a 250 diesel (third diesel). it was a 60 anniversary truck and looked pretty cool! went in and started to talk numbers. i informed them that i have no trade in and will finance on my own. just need to settle on the price of the new one.

invoice was $45,700
their offer was $42,700
list was $50,000

told them that they needed to be around $49,000 for me to even get excited. they said no way, not even close and would not budge from $42,700

when i left, there were no customers on the lot and about 10 sales people sitting around staring at each other.

i don't get it......

Check you post. You're saying that they wouldn't budge from 42,700, yet you need to get excited to pay more than that at 49,000?

I'll figure you meant 39,000.

F'em. If they don't want to play, walk and find someone who does.

oops, i meant $39,000

third dealer with a lot full of trucks that arn't moving. i'm running out of dealers, but no biggie. my 7.3 gets a lot better mileage than the new ones. in fact, the last one only was getting 9.8 MPG.

i'm patient. i can wait for better incentives.

Based on my rough math, $42,700 is about $1000 below invoice after a $2500 rebate. Unless my numbers are off, that's pretty darn good.

You may try negotiating the price of the new truck before you inform them you have no trade and will finance yourself. Trade and finance are both areas the dealer looks to make additional money - you inform them up front that you are taking these $$$ away from them, so they might not want to deal on the truck.

Ask them what the best price they will do if you buy that day is, they'll probably ask about the financing and trade. Try to just blow that off (tell them you are considering a couple of options) and focus on the best price for the new truck. Make sure they know you are looking to buy a truck 'that day' not 'just looking'.

Sometimes it also helps to say something like "I've found a few trucks I like, so I thought I'd stop here first and see what your best deal is."

Basically you won't get the best price until they know you are a serious buyer, you have other options to look at, and you haven't told them you are cutting off their extra gravy train by not having a trade in and not using dealer financing.

Hey Joat...you're probably not too far from a deal at the right dealer...using a Madison zip code...I figure dead cost...everything stripped out...is about $38900...give the guy some breathing room and you can probably put together a deal. Remember...he's got to eat also!!!
