im not sure if this is true but i was told v 10s years 99 and 01 spit out plugs sometimes? Is this true or is this guy just jerking my chain?reason i ask is I was thinking of buying a 99 f250 with a v 10 but when that spitting of the plugs was told to me now i dont think i wanna buy it.if this is true what would be the reason for this and is there a fix for this?if its not true then sorry but I just dont understand why an engine would shot plugs out.I guess i should stay away from a 99 and 01 v10s?
There is "some" truth to it, however its considered avoidable, and its not limited to V10's. There was a period during the time frame you mention when the heads only had 3 or 4 threads for holding the spark plugs, but quite a few other manufacturers did the same. With the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the aluminum heads and the steel plugs, they sometimes work themselves loose and blow out. It seems this happens most either where the plugs are recently changed (suggesting they weren't really properly torqued), or where they've been left in for a long time.
I believe that the consensus is - for all of these vehicles - that if you re-check plug torque every so often, maybe 10,000 miles, this isn't much of a problem. Eventually Ford whent to PI heads with more threads, and later still, all of the 3-valve V-10's have full threads.
There are quite a few older discussions on this if you want to do a search.
