This is for the Techs here, not the speculators and Knowit alls, My 04 superduty has had a "weeping" of engine oil (not trans) leaking from rear main engine seal and accumulating around bellhousing mate. Ford dealer said not to worry and they'd fix it, now that it is out from under 3/36 it's dripping enough to start leaving spots on driveway about size of dimes. I know that it's not that big of a deal for it to leak, but what are my options? How much does it typically cost to fix and will the fix last any longer than the original? Fill me in!
You're still covered by the diesel engine 5 yr/100k warranty if you're within the time/mileage window. All it should cost is the $100 deductible.
99F350 is correct in that it could be originating from somewhere else. A lot of leaks find its way to the bellhousing area. I'd have them clean up the leakage and put trace dye in the oil so they find out exactly where it's coming from.
Everyone is correct here. It's not uncommon to have an oil leak up top that looks like a rear main seal leak, but it doesn't really matter. Get your $100 bill ready and just have the dealer fix whatever is leaking.
I wouldn't worry too much about a reoccurring problem. The last oil leak I had fixed under warranty was on one of the work trucks. That was over 115,000 miles ago and it hasn't shown back up since.
