problems with my 351m

hey people. i have a f150 that has a 351m in it. i was told the motor came out of an outlaw racing car. after the motor has warmed up and then is shut off i can't get it to start back up. i have to let it cool down for a few minutes before it'll start. does anybody have an idea what would cause this problem. any help is greatly appreciated.

problems with my 351m

Not sure if it applies here, but "hot start" problems with big V8's is a something that spans all brands, all years. It's especially prevalent in header equipped engines. The deal is that the heat from the exhaust/manifold, going by the starter, heats the case of the starter so much that that armature binds/ won't turn over.

You will see "starter blankets" and heat shields sold by parts places to alleviate the problem. You can also put on a fresh or hi-torque starter if you're serious about fixing it.

If this motor came out of a race car, it probably has an advanced timing, they do this to get the most out of an engine. Try checking your timing to see if it's in specs. should be around 6 to 10 degrees B.T.D.C. When it gets hot does your valves rattle?

nope my valves don't rattle. it'll crank over it just is very hard to start if it's hot. this is not a persistant problem...it only happens once or twice every couple times i drive it.

Hey lr, your brain box could be about to go out. If you have one lying around try changing it and see what happens. A new one isnt very much, about 15 or 20 bucks. Also it sounds like you could have a fuel pump about to go out. I hope this engine is in the '73-'79 years, with the duraspark ignition and mechanical fuel pump? Hope to help, keep us posted. Rob
